JOHOR BAHRU: Sheraton Johor Bahru has introduced its newest lifestyle offering, Unspoken Bar, a speakeasy-style sanctuary designed to immerse guests in a world where heritage, design and crafted mixology intertwine.
Members of the media were given an exclusive first look on Friday evening, coinciding with the hotel’s inaugural Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony — a moment that added a festive glow to an already captivating unveiling.
Discreetly nestled within the hotel, Unspoken Bar is conceptualised as a contemporary echo of Johor Bahru’s past. Its design draws inspiration from the stately mansions of the city’s early Chinese merchants, whose homes doubled as communal spaces for family, celebration, and the forging of new beginnings.

Rich jade-green tones — a nod to jade’s cultural symbolism — anchor the interior, complemented by wood textures, stone accents, and lantern-like lighting that softly illuminates the space.
“The idea was to create a venue that feels deeply personal,” said Vincent Liew, Director of Food & Beverage at Sheraton Johor Bahru. “Unspoken is a place where stories are not only told, but felt — where every detail honours the resilience and ambition of those who built Johor Bahru into the city it is today.”
In his address, Vincent Liew reflected on a season of beginnings—one marked not only by Christmas lights, but by the steady glow of a new chapter for Sheraton Johor Bahru.
He reminded guests that the hotel opened just three months ago as the first transformed Sheraton in Malaysia and Singapore—a milestone he described as both a legacy and a promise. Since then, he said, the team has embraced a period of learning and refinement, “an opportunity to listen, to adapt, and to elevate our service, so that Sheraton Johor Bahru truly becomes a place where people feel welcome and belonged.”

Liew described the transformed Sheraton as “the world’s gathering place,” a space where cultures meet and memories are made. That vision comes to life in its contemporary design, signature outlets, and community-centred weekend programs celebrating the flavours and stories of Johor Bahru.
With this spirit of togetherness, he welcomed guests to the hotel’s first Christmas celebration, offering a preview of its holiday buffet and a glimpse of the soon-to-open Unspoken Bar.
“As we light this tree, we are reminded of the spirit of giving, love, and togetherness,” he said, before inviting the crowd to “light up the night and make this a Christmas to remember.”
He closed with the simplest blessing of all: Merry Christmas to all.
The bar’s signature cocktail collections bring these stories to life. The Wong Ah Fook Trilogy, known as The Builder’s Journey, traces the footsteps of the young migrant who helped shape early Johor Bahru.
Roots of the South pays homage to humble beginnings; Stone & Spice layers warmth and complexity to mirror the building of the city’s foundations; and Light of the Straits — bright, refined, and elegantly forward — celebrates a legacy that endures across generations.

“Light of the Straits is more than a cocktail — it is a celebration of Johor Bahru’s enduring legacy. At Unspoken Bar, every drink tells a story, and every guest becomes part of that journey,” Liew added.
Equally evocative is the Tan Hiok Nee Trilogy: The Merchant’s Path. Silk & Spice honours the flow of trade routes; The Honourable House reflects Tan Hiok Nee’s steady leadership among the historic Five Tigers of Ngee Heng; and Harbour of Light offers a warm, reassuring finish that pays tribute to the trust he fostered within the community.
With its jade-inspired palette, silk textures, and lantern-lit ambience, Unspoken Bar offers a sensory experience that invites guests to pause, reflect, and step inside Johor Bahru’s layered history. It is a space designed for connection — to the city, to its stories, and to the people who continue to shape it.
Sheraton Johor Bahru announced that Unspoken Bar will officially open to the public soon, operating daily from 3.00 PM to 12.00 AM.
With the launch of Unspoken Bar and its first Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, Sheraton Johor Bahru continues to build its reputation as a vibrant social hub for both locals and international travellers.

Children and young adults from St. Joseph Church, Plentong lifted the room with their gentle harmonies, their Christmas carols weaving warmth and joy through the crowd. Each familiar note seemed to soften faces and spark smiles, turning the moment into a small but heartfelt reminder of the season’s simple magic.
Students from Tari Alif Johor Bahru took to the stage with a graceful, spirited performance that quickly captivated everyone in the room, drawing smiles and admiration from the delighted audience.
