JOHOR BAHRU: Fifteen years ago, a seed of hope was planted in the fertile soil of education. Today, that humble beginning has blossomed into a thriving institution where young minds are nurtured, talents discovered and dreams transformed into possibilities.
From approximately 430 students in 2011 to nearly 1,400 today, Austin Heights International School (AHIS) has charted a remarkable journey built upon perseverance, innovation and the belief that education must enrich both intellect and character.
The school celebrated its 15th anniversary on Oct 31 with pomp and splendour, bringing together distinguished guests, educators, parents, students and the wider community.

Themed “15 Years of Inspiring Minds, Building Futures”, the celebration began with the thunderous beating of 24 festive drums at the school foyer, their rhythmic resonance symbolising unity, strength and prosperity.
Established on Jan 3, 2011, AHIS embraces the educational philosophy “East Meets West”, harmonising international education with traditional Eastern values.
Offering an educational pathway from Preschool to Pre-University, the institution seeks to develop confident, creative and independent thinkers equipped for an increasingly interconnected world.
Addressing the gathering, AHIS founder chairman Dato’ Ir. Steve Chong Yoon On reflected upon the school’s transformation with gratitude and pride.
“Fifteen years ago, we planted a seed. Today, it has flourished into a community that touches lives and shapes futures,” he said.
Chong attributed the school’s achievements to the dedication of educators, administrators, parents, students and its Board of Governors.
He expressed appreciation to teachers and staff, past and present, for their tireless commitment, while thanking parents for entrusting the institution with their children’s education.
“To our students and alumni, you are our greatest pride. Your achievement and character are the true reflections of what Austin Heights International School stands for,” he said.

Chong also paid special tribute to AHIS chief executive officer Datin Low Peck Tim, whose perseverance and leadership helped translate the founding vision into reality.
Beyond academic distinction, he emphasised that education must cultivate humanity.
“Education is not only about producing excellent students. It is about nurturing good human beings,” he said.
His message underscored the importance of compassion, integrity, humility and responsibility alongside intellectual excellence.
Over the years, AHIS students have achieved international recognition in Cambridge IGCSE and A Level examinations, including Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards with Top in the World and Top in Malaysia honours.
The institution also attained a five-star ranking under the Education Ministry’s Private Education Institutional Quality Standard (SKIPS) programme.
Its commitment to innovation was further demonstrated when students emerged champions of the National AI Competition 2025 in the AI Innovation Track, Category A.
These achievements reflect an educational environment where curiosity flourishes, creativity is encouraged and technological advancement complements traditional learning.
Meanwhile, Rokiah Ahmad, Senior Principal Assistant Director of the Private Education Unit at the Johor State Education Department, delivered an address on behalf of Johor State Education Director Zulkurnain Abdul Rahman.
For Rokiah, the occasion held personal significance, having collaborated with AHIS through the 2019 Public Speaking Competition, 2020 International English Camp and International Day celebrations in 2025 and 2026.

She commended Chong, Low, the school leadership, teachers, staff and parents for their contributions to the institution’s growth.
Rokiah emphasised that education must transcend textbooks and examinations to cultivate cultural understanding, mutual respect and compassion.
She expressed hope that AHIS would achieve greater success, strengthen partnerships and continue transforming young lives.
Low reaffirmed the school’s determination to prepare students for an evolving world without compromising moral values.
“Our ambition is not merely to prepare students for the future, but to empower them to shape it,” she said.
Her words reflected the institution’s aspiration to nurture individuals capable of confronting uncertainty with courage, embracing innovation and exercising leadership with compassion.
The anniversary celebrations offered a nostalgic journey through the school’s history.
An exhibition titled “Walk Down Memory Lane” showcased significant milestones, while the anniversary video, “A Journey of 15 Years (2011–2026)”, captured its evolution and collective achievements.
Music, dance and cultural performances added colour to the festivities.
The school orchestra performed Viva La Vida and Dancing Queen, while Chinese umbrella and Latin dance performances captivated the audience.
The choir’s rendition of We Are the World conveyed a message of unity and shared humanity, complemented by the Indonesian cultural performance Tari Bajidor Kahot.
A ceremonial anniversary cake-cutting marked the celebration’s highlight, symbolising 15 years of dedication and partnership.

Among the distinguished guests were Cambridge International Country Director for Malaysia and Brunei Ng Kim Huat; Singapore Deputy Consul in Johor Bahru Rayner Gan; Indonesian Consul for Economic Affairs Eftariyadi Badri; and Puan Hajah Zaiton, representing the Pasir Gudang District Education Officer.
Also present were Austin Heights Group of Companies chief executive officer Chong Khai Siang, Board of Governors members, school leaders, the Parent Support Group, teachers, parents and students.
Held alongside the school’s Open Day, the celebration featured Mathematics and Science workshops, STEAM showcases, robotics, drone activities and interactive curriculum displays.
Younger children enjoyed the Preschool Veggie Fun & Discovery Day, featuring storytelling, simple scientific experiments, creative activities and movement games.
Guided school tours and family activities further enriched the occasion.
As the festivities concluded, the anniversary reaffirmed a timeless truth: education’s greatest legacy lies not merely in academic accolades, but in the lives it transforms and the values it instils.
For AHIS, its journey from 430 students to nearly 1,400 represents countless dreams nurtured, opportunities created and futures illuminated.
As another chapter unfolds, its enduring mission remains to kindle curiosity, inspire excellence and cultivate compassionate hearts.
For buildings may rise, accolades may fade and generations may pass, but the light of education, once kindled in a young heart, can illuminate a lifetime.
And through every triumph and tomorrow yet to unfold, the school’s guiding motto remains: “Together We Excel.”
Austin Heights International School into a flourishing institution where knowledge shapes minds, values mould character and dreams take flight.
