Life is Funny – Hat-Trick, an event organised by Cancer Research Malaysia (CRMY) brought laughter and fun as performers showed their prowess in front of more than 1,000 guests at Sentul HGH Convention Centre on July 9.

Taking centre stage was Gurmit Singh, or popularly known as Phua Chu Kang who brought down the house with his unique stand-up comedy. He also belted a few numbers, and some sporting guests went on stage to lend a helping hand.

Gurmit who came all the way down from Singapore on his bike, demonstrated how laughter can bring people together for a greater purpose.

He later auctioned off his book titled What Was I Thinking to raise fund for the organisation.

Local comedian Mad Sabah also showed his prowess on stage with his casual but deep jokes, especially about his home state Sabah.

Mad who was born and raised in Sabah outskirt fondly remembered living “in the dark” as there was no electricity and clean water supply, proudly saying his village folks had been contributing to Earth Hour nightly!

The stand-up comedian took a hilarious way to highlight the poverty in his hometown of Kunak, Sabah, creating non-stop laughter among the guests.

Also performing was highly acclaimed violinist Jessie L, as she pranced around the guests with her electric violin in a spectacular way.

The evening was hosted by entertainer Datuk Leonard Tan, who splendidly held the fort, reinforcing the importance of supporting cancer research.

CRMY expressed their appreciation to sponsors and volunteers, including Tenaga Nasional Berhad and Fragomen in lending support in making the event a success.

“Cancer can be difficult for many to talk about, but the event uses humour and relatable stories to open the door to awareness,” said its spokesman.

CRMY is the country’s only independent, non-profit cancer research organisation, dedicated to saving lives through impactful research focused on Asian population.

Established in 2000, CRMY conducts groundbreaking studies in prevention, early detection and treatment to improve cancer survival in the region.
