JOHOR BAHRU: In the gentle hush of Ramadan, when hearts soften and charity flows like a quiet river, a group of children from two welfare homes found themselves at the centre of a day woven with kindness, dignity and joy.
Forty children from Asrama Kebajikan Ar-Rayyan and Maahad Tahfiz Sains Al-Insyirah were the special guests of a cross-industry collaboration led by Columbia Asia Hospital Tebrau, Columbia Asia Hospital Iskandar Puteri and Care Luxury Hotels & Resorts, together with MOG Eyewear Angsana Mall, Jakel, and The Good Bread.
The Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, aptly named “Raya Dalam Seindah Makna”, unfolded as more than a programme. It became a day where compassion was not merely spoken of, but quietly lived.

The morning began with the comforting aroma of freshly baked bread at The Good Bread, where the children were welcomed into the warm world of baking. For many of them, it was their first glimpse into the craft behind the golden loaves that grace dining tables.
With curious eyes and eager smiles, the children watched as bakers demonstrated the delicate art of kneading dough, shaping loaves and guiding them into ovens glowing with heat. Flour dusted the air, laughter filled the room and the children listened intently as the simple magic of bread-making unfolded before them.
It was a lesson not just in baking, but in discovery.
Each child was later presented with freshly baked bread to take home — a small yet meaningful gift that carried the warmth of the morning’s experience.
From there, the programme moved to the bustling corridors of Angsana Mall where another meaningful gesture awaited them. At MOG Eyewear, the children underwent eye screening sessions, ensuring that their visual health would not be overlooked.
For some, it was the first time their eyesight had ever been checked.
The screenings, conducted with care and patience, reflected the programme’s deeper purpose — that dignity begins with attention to the smallest needs.
The children were then escorted to Jakel, the renowned textile and fashion retailer synonymous with festive attire during Hari Raya.
There, excitement replaced the earlier quiet curiosity. Racks of colourful fabrics and elegant traditional outfits beckoned as the children were invited to personally select their own Raya clothing.

It was a moment many of them rarely experience.
For once, they were not recipients of hand-me-downs or pre-selected donations. They were allowed the simple but powerful joy of choosing for themselves — a reminder that every child deserves the dignity of celebration.
As the day gently slipped into evening, the programme culminated in a Majlis Berbuka Puasa held at the Columbus 1 Ballroom, where nearly 200 guests gathered in a shared spirit of Ramadan.
Among them were medical professionals, corporate partners and senior representatives from the collaborating organisations, all united by a single purpose — to bring joy to the children.
The evening’s iftar dinner was generously sponsored by Trove Hotel Johor Bahru, ensuring that the young guests experienced a festive and memorable breaking of fast.
The ballroom soon filled with the soft rhythms of music and laughter as guests and children mingled freely, dissolving the usual boundaries between benefactor and beneficiary.
Adding colour to the evening was a stirring Zapin Johor cultural performance by Tari Aliff, whose dancers moved with graceful precision, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Johor.
The performance drew enthusiastic applause, with many of the children watching wide-eyed as tradition unfolded before them in vibrant motion.
Interactive games and cheerful activities followed, creating moments of camaraderie between the children and the attending guests.
Before the evening concluded, each child received duit raya and a special gift set — small tokens that nonetheless carried immense meaning.

For many of the children, it was a night that would linger long after Ramadan had passed.
Speaking at the event Group Care Luxury Hotels & Resorts Director of Marketing Communications Jasmine Goh said the evening was a reminder of the deeper values that define the holy month — compassion, generosity and togetherness.
Goh noted that while the event may have appeared as a simple gathering over a shared meal, its purpose ran deeper: to create moments of joy and belonging for children whose resilience and positivity continue to inspire those around them.
“Ramadan is a time that reminds us of the values that matter most — compassion, generosity and togetherness,” she said.
“Tonight’s gathering reflects exactly that spirit. It is not just an event, but a small effort from our organisations to share joy, kindness and meaningful moments with the children who inspire us with their resilience and positivity.”
For Goh, the initiative reflects a philosophy that extends beyond the traditional role of hospitality.
“At Care Luxury Hotels & Resorts, hospitality goes beyond welcoming guests through our hotel doors,” she said. “It is about caring for the community around us and creating experiences that bring people together.”
She added that meaningful collaborations between organisations play a crucial role in strengthening community bonds and amplifying acts of kindness.
“We are therefore deeply grateful to be partnering with Columbia Asia Hospital Southern Region, whose commitment to community wellbeing perfectly aligns with our own values,” she said.
Echoing the sentiment, Columbia Asia Hospital, Iskandar Puteri Chief Executive Officer Dr Ding Eng Li expressed heartfelt appreciation to the many individuals and partners who helped make the event possible.
“Your support and dedication are deeply appreciated and form the heartbeat of the success of tonight’s programme,” she said, acknowledging the collective spirit that brought the initiative to life.
But the evening, she emphasised, belonged most of all to the children who were being celebrated.
Turning her attention to the young guests, Dr Ding shared a message that blended warmth with quiet encouragement — a reminder that their dreams matter and that their futures hold immense promise.
“To the children we celebrate this evening, we hope that this small contribution will help brighten your Hari Raya celebrations,” she said.

Her words carried a gentle yet powerful call for perseverance.
Dr Ding encouraged the children to remain committed to their studies, to show respect to those who guide them, and to pursue their ambitions with courage and determination.
“Continue to study diligently, respect your teachers and guardians, and pursue your dreams with passion and determination. Your future is truly precious,” she said.
Indeed, the programme reflected a rare yet powerful collaboration across industries, demonstrating how healthcare, hospitality and retail can unite in service of a greater purpose.
More importantly, it illustrated the essence of Ramadan itself — compassion translated into action.
As the children departed with gifts in hand and smiles upon their faces, the lights of the ballroom slowly dimmed.
But the spirit of the day — the laughter shared, the kindness given and the dignity restored — lingered quietly in the hearts of all who were present.
And in that lingering warmth lay the true meaning of “Raya Dalam Seindah Makna” — that the beauty of celebration is not found in grandeur, but in the simple act of making another person’s day brighter.
Present for the evening included James Chong, CEO of Columbia Asia Hospital, Tebrau, Jeslin Chong, Group Chief Operating Officer Care Luxury Hotels & Resorts, Ellena Tan, Marketing Manager, Columbia Asia Hospital, Tebrau, and Dr Ding Eng Li, CEO Columbia Asia Hospital, Iskandar Puteri.
