JOHOR BAHRU: What began as a simple act of giving has grown into one of Johor Bahru’s most heartwarming annual traditions. Fifty students from St. Joseph’s School arrived at the DoubleTree by Hilton on Friday morning shy, excited, and unaware that an entire community had spent months preparing a day dedicated entirely to them — a day of dignity, joy, and hope.
The event, organised by Global Helping Hands, transformed the hotel’s ballroom into a lively celebration of compassion.
Laughter echoed across neatly laid tables, entertainers tuned their instruments, and hotel staff bustled quietly around, making sure every child felt welcomed and valued.

“This is not just a charity event,” said Poonam Shashi Singh, chairperson of Global Helping Hands and the driving force behind the initiative.
“It’s a reminder to these children that they are seen, they matter, and the community is rooting for them. Every year, we want them to walk away feeling loved, confident, and inspired.”
For many of the students, the lunch alone was an unforgettable experience — a beautifully prepared, fully sponsored meal courtesy of DoubleTree by Hilton Johor Bahru. Chandeliers glittered overhead as the children settled into plush seats, their eyes widening at the elaborate buffet spread, from chicken pasta and fish fillets to colourful desserts that seemed almost too pretty to eat.
Hotel staff said they were honoured to host the students.
“To us, hospitality is about caring for people,” said one representative from the hotel’s management team. “Today was about giving these children memories they’ll treasure for years.”
Poonam called the hotel’s contribution “extraordinary,” adding, “DoubleTree didn’t just sponsor a meal — they gave these children an experience of warmth, kindness, and respect. That stays with them.”
But the event was more than a treat; it was a boost to their future.
Each child received a brand-new school kit and crisp uniforms, thoughtfully prepared to support their learning journey. Volunteers handed out neatly wrapped sets of stationery, shoes, socks, and uniforms — items many families often struggle to replace.
“The look in their eyes when they opened their packs… it said everything,” Poonam shared. “For some, this was the first time they had brand-new uniforms of their own. We take these things for granted, but for them, it’s empowerment.”
Teachers accompanying the students said the support would make a real difference.

“We see how confidence shifts when a child has proper school supplies and a uniform that fits,” one teacher said quietly. “It affects attendance, motivation, everything. Today, these children received far more than gifts. They received a boost of dignity.”
Throughout the event, the room stayed lively thanks to spirited performances by United Singers and The JB BoysZ Music. At one point, a group of students rushed to the front to dance, cheered on by their friends and the entertainers on stage. The scene drew smiles from every corner of the ballroom.
“The performers brought so much joy — the energy was contagious,” Poonam said. “This is what community feels like.”
Sponsors also played a vital role in making the day memorable.
Julie’s Biscuits, Bon Maxim, Wall’s Ice Cream, The Bakers Solution and the Majid Bhai Foundation provided treats that kept the children beaming. A mountain of Julie’s butter crackers vanished within minutes; tubs of ice cream melted quickly in eager hands.
And then there was the expatriate community — families who contributed funds, gifts, logistical support, and hours of volunteer work.
“They have been unbelievable,” Poonam said. “Their generosity is heartfelt and consistent. Many of them treat this event as a personal mission.”
The spirit of the day was one of unity — ordinary people coming together to create extraordinary impact.
“This is what happens when hearts align,” Poonam reflected. “Every sponsor, every volunteer, every entertainer, every partner — they believed in lifting these children. And when a child feels supported, it can change the course of their life.”
The children expressed their gratitude in their own simple, touching ways — shy smiles, hugging everyone and handshakes, heartfelt “terima kasih” as they clutched their new uniforms and goody packs.
One boy, no older than ten, whispered to a volunteer, “This is my best day of the year.” Another said he couldn’t wait to show his new school kit to his mother.

For Poonam, moments like these are the reason the event continues year after year.
“These little voices, these little hearts — they deserve every chance we can give them,” she said. “If today plants even one seed of confidence, hope, or ambition, then it’s worth everything.”
As the event came to a close, volunteers hugged the children, snapped final photographs, and watched their parents’ cars pull away — students waving from the windows, their bags full and their spirits lifted.
In a world often divided by noise and negativity, this simple afternoon at DoubleTree by Hilton stood as a quiet yet profound reminder: kindness still builds communities, and generosity still shapes futures.
“This is only one day,” Poonam said softly, “but the love behind it lasts much longer.”
And with that, Global Helping Hands closed another chapter in its mission — a chapter filled with humanity, compassion, and the unwavering belief that joy multiplies when it is shared.
Global Helping Hands is more than an NGO — it is a quiet lifeline for the needy, the destitute, and the forgotten. For years, its volunteers have moved steadily through the state like a gentle, unwavering tide of compassion, offering warmth to those who have none and dignity to those who have lost it.
Whether during festive seasons or in the unremarkable days in between, they are always present — not with fanfare, but with open arms, ready hearts, and the simple desire to lift someone’s burden. Their work is a reminder that kindness, when practiced faithfully, becomes a form of hope in motion.
Laughter echoed across neatly laid tables, entertainers tuned their instruments, and hotel staff bustled quietly around, making sure every child felt welcomed and valued.
