JOHOR BAHRU: At SMK Mohd Khalid, leadership is more than a title. For members of the Student Leaders Board (SLB), it is about discipline, service, and giving every student a voice.
In an exclusive interview, the young leaders shared their inspirations, challenges, and hopes for the future of student leadership in Johor.
Treasurer DSL Muhammad Mikail Azhar said his journey into leadership was inspired by Head Coach Nur Dayana Binti Omar, who encouraged him to step out of his shell.

“I saw many of my peers had great talents but hesitated to showcase them. That inspired me to create an environment where everyone feels valued and supported,” he said.
Vice Treasurer DSL Cinta Aaesha Mohamad Rizqi Wang added that leadership has taught her the value of time management.
“Balancing academics and responsibilities is not easy, but with discipline and proper scheduling, it’s possible to excel in both,” she explained.
President SL Harenee Iswara Raja emphasised that leadership rests on discipline, responsibility, empathy, and integrity.
“A true leader must have the courage to do what is right and the heart to support others,” she said.
Vice President SL Adam Iman Mohd Azlan stressed inclusivity in his role.
“I see myself as a leader for all students, regardless of race, gender, or religion. Leadership is not about position but about inspiring others,” he shared.

Secretary II SL Muhammad Syakirrurahman Mohd Syadidi described the council’s mission as representing the school in academics and co-curricular activities, while also supporting teachers and organising student-driven programs.
Among the council’s key initiatives is an anti-bullying campaign, led by Mikail. The project includes awareness videos, posters, and collaboration with counsellors to promote a safer school environment.
Secretary SL Nur Jannah Mohammed Suadi noted that Johor’s SLBs are unique in Malaysia, carrying heavier responsibilities than their counterparts in other states.
“It is challenging, but it also teaches us teamwork and discipline,” she said.
Conflicts, when they arise, are handled with patience and communication.
“We listen, avoid judgment, and resolve issues together,” said Mikail.
Exco Manager SL Sriraam Magendran added that mutual respect and communication are the backbone of effective teamwork, while collaborations with other schools strengthen district-level leadership initiatives.
From representing Johor Bahru in competitions to joining a cultural exchange in Riau, Batam, leaders such as DSL Cinta and SL Muhammad Faris Haidar Mohd Firdause say their proudest moments come from broadening horizons beyond school walls.
Harenee admitted that confidence did not come overnight.
“Leadership has taught me resilience and initiative. Every task, big or small, has helped shape my character,” she said.

Still, challenges remain. Public speaking is a skill several leaders, including Syakir and SL Muhammad Isma Hariz Mohd Roslan, are working hard to improve through practice and preparation.
When asked about the future, Jannah envisioned leadership as a platform for nurturing innovators, entrepreneurs, and socially responsible citizens.
The leaders also hope for greater community involvement.
“I’d like to see more collaboration with external organisations for charity and outreach programs,” Adam Iman Mohd Azlan said.
For younger students, Sriraam offered simple but powerful advice:
“Leadership is not about titles. Focus on discipline, responsibility, and good manners. Those are the foundations of true leadership.”
From wellness campaigns to cultural exchanges, the Student Leaders Board has been at the forefront of shaping school life through impactful programs.
Among its key initiatives this year were the Healthy Eating Launch by the Ministry of Education, where Harenee Iswara Raja delivered engaging talks, and an event with YB Suhaizan Kaiat, in which MKSLB coordinated logistics and emceeing.
The Board also led major school traditions, including Teacher’s Day celebrations, Form 1 orientation, and the Back to School program, ensuring each event was meaningful and well-run.
MKSLB further promoted cultural appreciation through Chinese New Year and Hari Raya celebrations, and strengthened global ties via an exchange with Hijiyama Girls High School, Japan. Recognition of student achievements was also highlighted in the Majlis Apresiasi.
Looking ahead, MKSLB is planning initiatives such as a Cultural & Heritage Program, Anger Management workshops, and district-level leadership training, reflecting its vision of nurturing confident, responsible, and empathetic young leaders.

The Student Leader Board (SLB) of the school has proven its strength, vision, and commitment to service, earning praise from the principal Rostena Ismail for their outstanding achievements this year.
In a proud milestone for the school, two members of the SLB have been elected to the District Student Leader Board, a recognition that not only highlights their leadership skills but also underscores the school’s commitment to nurturing capable and responsible young leaders.
“This recognition reflects their capability and integrity as young leaders. I am truly proud of their dedication and achievements,” Rostena remarked.
Beyond district achievements, the SLB has carried the school’s name across borders. Recently, student leaders represented the school visit to SMA Negeri 1 Batam, Indonesia, where they engaged in knowledge exchange, shared best practices, and built meaningful connections with peers abroad.
The international exposure marked a valuable step in broadening their perspectives and strengthening their leadership capacity.
Back home, the SLB continues to play an integral role in shaping school culture. Their initiatives – including the highly impactful Anti-Bullying Campaign – have fostered unity, responsibility, and a culture of care within the school community.
“The SLB members remain consistently helpful, responsible, and supportive towards their peers and teachers. Their leadership and commitment have been vital in ensuring the success of various programs and initiatives,” she stressed.
With their resilience, passion for service, and unwavering commitment to excellence, the SLB of SMK Mohd Khalid stands as a beacon of student leadership. As the Principal expressed with confidence, these young leaders will continue to inspire their peers and uphold the values of teamwork and integrity – carrying the school’s legacy of leadership into the future.
