JOHOR BAHRU: Behind every child that believes in him or herself, is a parent who believed in them first.

The main role of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) is to promote closer relations between schools and families. The school and the family are the two biggest forces that shape a child’s growth and development.

It is therefore sensible for families and schools to actively collaborate when it comes to managing the education of children. The PTA serves this very purpose.

ApaKhabar TV spoke to six parents who are members of the PTA of the school on their roles and scope of responsibility.

Parents and teachers engage in face-to-face discussions during the meeting.

Datuk Yahya Jaafar, chairman of the PTA of SMK Sultan Ismail says that one of the major advantages of joining a PTA is the increased communication between parents and teachers.

“You can stay informed about school events, curriculum updates, and any issues that may arise,” said Datuk Yahya who is also the national PTA chairman.

Additionally, he said, being part of a PTA allows you to have a voice in decision-making processes, such as fundraising initiatives or educational processes.

“This gives you the chance to shape the educational environment for your child and other students,” he stressed.

Another benefit, he adds is the sense of belonging and support that comes from being part of a community of parents who share similar goals and concerns.

“You can build relationships with other parents and create a network of support,” he said.

He said PTAs often organize educational events and workshops for parents, providing valuable resources and information to help you better support your child’s learning at home.

Mazlan Sulor, chairman of SMK Impian Emas PTA says joining a PTA requires a significant amount of time and energy.

He said from attending meetings and planning events to volunteering at school, it can be demanding.

However, he said, the sense of fulfillment you’ll feel when you see the positive impact on your child’s education is worth it.

“Effectively communicating with other parents and teachers can sometimes be challenging as differing opinions and conflicting schedules may arise,” he said.

However, he mentioned that open and respectful dialogue will help bridge any gaps and create a supportive community.

Azli Suhaimy Abdullah, PTA chairman of SK Medini says by working together, both parents and teachers can create a supportive environment that fosters student success.

“Improved parent involvement not only strengthens the bond between home and school but also allows for a more comprehensive understanding of each student’s needs,” he explained.

Effective communication strategies, he said, such as regular meetings and clear channels of communication, help ensure that everyone is on the same page and working towards common goals.

Dato’ Suhaila Ahmad who is from the PTA of SMK Seri Perling believes that there are many benefits of improved parent involvement, namely better understanding of your child’s journey, increased awareness of school policies and procedures and opportunities to contribute ideas and suggestion.

“Enhanced support for your child’s academic and social development and better coordination between home and school for a holistic approach,” she said.

She said by attending these gatherings, you can engage in face-to-face discussions with other parents and teachers, fostering a sense of community and understanding.

“Participating in these events allows you to stay updated on important information and changes within the association,” she explained.

She went on to say that another way to enhance communication is by utilizing technology platforms such as email or messaging apps.

“These tools provide a convenient and efficient way to share information, ask questions, and coordinate activities,” she elaborated.

Razak Ismail, chairman of the PTA of SMK St. Joseph said your involvement in the PTA can enhance support by organizing events and initiatives that promote academic success and overall well-being.

“You can contribute your ideas and opinions to shape the educational environment,” he said.

As members of the PTA, he said, it gives you the opportunity to connect with other parents and form a supportive community.

He said from organizing fundraisers to advocating for important educational issues, your efforts can have a meaningful impact on your child’s education and the school community as a whole.

“The PTA enables parents to have a voice in shaping the school’s policies and programs, ensuring that the needs and concerns of both parents and students are addressed,” he opined.

Shamsudin Ahmad who is the chairman of SMK Skudai PTA pointed out that the association can also play a role in mediating conflicts by acting as a neutral party and facilitating discussions between all parties involved.

He said one way to achieve balance is by creating a culture of respect and understanding within the PTA.

“Encouraging open dialogue and valuing different opinions can help bridge the gap between parents and teachers,” he said.

He made it clear that it’s important to recognize that both parties have the best interests of the students at heart.

By aligning the association’s mission with the school’s vision, parents and teachers can work together towards a common purpose.

“This shared vision helps to minimize conflicts and allows for a more collaborative approach in decision-making,” he added.
