A common kingfisher, often spotted in trees, but also sometimes close to the ground as this one in the photo.

Immediately recognisable by its distinctive white throat and chest, blue upperparts and red-orange bill. Their habitats include forests, wetlands, coastal areas and also urban environment.

They feed on fish, insects and lizards.

Their loud calls can be heard early morning and late evening from a great distance away. Sometimes in the morning, their calls compete with the rooster and the koel.

Also called Pekaka Dada Putih or Pekaka Belukar in Malay.
