JOHOR BAHRU: Life seldom grants us the privilege of turning back its pages. Yet, when fate offers a second chance, perhaps its greatest purpose is not merely to live again, but to become a beacon of hope for those still struggling in life’s darkest hours.

For lung cancer survivor James Ho, affectionately known as Uncle James, the gift of another tomorrow has become a powerful reminder that life is measured not by the years one possesses, but by the compassion one bestows upon others.

His extraordinary journey of survival, gratitude and humanitarian service will take centre stage when Yayasan Suria JB Care hosts its grand charity gala dinner on Nov 28 at Pekin Restaurant, Daiman 18 Golf Resort, Johor Jaya.

A striking painting generously donated by artist Tay Poi San (second from right) takes centre stage ahead of Yayasan Suria JB Care’s upcoming Charity Dinner on November 28, where art becomes a heartfelt expression of compassion and generosity. The artwork, destined for a charity auction, carries a message of hope, reminding us that every brushstroke of kindness can help transform lives and bring light to families facing hardship.

The evening will also witness the launch of his autobiography, One More Time, a deeply personal testament to life’s fragility, the triumph of perseverance and the enduring power of hope.

But beyond the elegance of the occasion lies a far greater mission — to raise RM800,000 for underprivileged families, vulnerable children and individuals whose daily existence is overshadowed by hardship.

Yayasan Suria JB Care treasurer Joyce Ong said the occasion represents something profoundly meaningful.

“To me, ‘One More Time’ is more than just the title of a book. It reminds us to treasure every day, appreciate the people around us and never lose hope when life becomes difficult.

“When life gives us another chance, perhaps the most meaningful thing we can do is to use that chance to make life better for others,” she said.

For Joyce, charity is neither an occasional gesture nor a ceremonial obligation. It is a deeply human response to suffering, often born from witnessing another person’s anguish.

Among her most unforgettable experiences was the desperate appeal to save Lee Wai Shiang, a man battling a serious heart condition requiring surgery.

His wife was Joyce’s friend, making the family’s predicament especially heartbreaking.

Bringing Hope to the Needy: Compassion finds its true meaning as Yayasan Suria JB Care reaches out to underprivileged families, bringing not only essential food supplies and daily necessities but also warmth, dignity and the comforting assurance that they are not forgotten in their struggles.

Behind the medical emergency stood a frightened family, burdened by uncertainty and desperately hoping that compassion might succeed where their financial resources could not.

Determined to help, Joyce brought the case before Yayasan Suria JB Care.

What followed was an extraordinary demonstration of public generosity.

Within one month, the foundation and compassionate Malaysians raised RM660,000 towards his heart operation. More than 2,850 donation receipts were issued.

For Joyce, those receipts were never merely financial records.

They represented thousands of helping hands reaching across differences, united by one extraordinary purpose.

“Behind every receipt was someone who had chosen to contribute towards helping Lee Wai Shiang. Some people gave more, while others contributed whatever they could afford, but every contribution represented a heart willing to help,” she recalled.

The experience left an indelible impression.

It demonstrated how one person’s concern could awaken the conscience of an entire community and transform another family’s darkest hour into a moment of hope.

“For me, this is the true meaning of charity. It is not simply about raising money or issuing receipts. It is about caring enough to take action, giving people hope when they need it most and reminding them that they do not have to face their difficulties alone.”

His recovery stands as a testament to compassion, generosity and the healing power of community solidarity.

Yet countless other families continue their silent battles against poverty, illness and uncertainty.

Some parents worry about placing sufficient food on the family table. Others struggle with medical expenses, while children from disadvantaged backgrounds face obstacles that threaten their education.

These are the lives Yayasan Suria JB Care hopes to touch through its fundraising initiative.

The foundation’s programmes encompass food assistance, educational support, medical aid, emergency relief and assistance for vulnerable households.

Its free meal programme at SK Desa Jaya exemplifies how practical compassion can help children whose circumstances demand additional support.

Contributions from sponsors, including supplies of milk and eggs, have further strengthened its community outreach.

Nevertheless, Joyce acknowledged that charitable organisations frequently confront the painful reality of growing needs and limited resources.

“As much as we wish we could help everyone, it is not always possible to meet every need immediately,” she said.

Even so, she believes compassion must never surrender to adversity.

“Sometimes, knowing that they have not been forgotten can itself bring comfort to those who are going through a difficult time.”

An anticipated highlight of the gala will be a charity auction featuring eight generously donated oil paintings.

For Joyce, these artworks symbolise far more than artistic beauty.

Extending Compassion, Inspiring Hope: Representatives of Yayasan Suria JB Care, during an official visit to Hospital Sultan Ismail (HSI), reaffirm their commitment to supporting psychiatric patients, championing mental health awareness and extending a compassionate hand to those battling emotional and psychological challenges, reminding them that no one should walk the journey towards healing and recovery alone

Each painting carries an unseen promise — that generosity can be transformed into nourishment for a hungry child, educational opportunities or assistance for a family facing hardship.

Art lovers, businesses and members of the public are encouraged to participate.

The gala also offers sponsorship tables ranging from RM2,000 to RM20,000, providing opportunities for individuals and corporate organisations to support the humanitarian mission.

Joyce stressed that contributions, regardless of their size, possess the power to change lives when united by collective goodwill.

“We do not have to be rich to be kind, and we do not have to be powerful to make a difference,” she said.

As treasurer, she remains equally conscious of the responsibility accompanying every donation.

Transparency, accountability and proper financial management, she emphasised, are essential to preserving public trust.

The foundation’s motto, “Serving with Love and Humility,” remains the guiding principle behind its humanitarian endeavours.

Ultimately, Joyce hopes the charity gala will inspire a legacy extending far beyond one memorable evening.

For Uncle James, surviving cancer has given deeper meaning to life’s remaining chapters.

For the foundation, every donation offers another opportunity to ease suffering and rekindle hope.

And for society, perhaps the greatest lesson is that kindness need not await wealth, recognition or a special occasion.

For somewhere tonight, a child may be sleeping hungry, a mother may be silently weeping, and a family may be praying for a miracle.

We may not possess the power to change the whole world. But through one compassionate act, we may change someone’s entire world.

And therein lies the timeless message of One More Time — that the greatest gift of a second chance is the opportunity to become someone else’s first glimmer of hope.
