JOHOR BAHRU: They may wear different uniforms, serve under different hotel brands and work behind different counters, but for one memorable morning, 1,111 hoteliers put aside their professional identities to celebrate friendship, unity and the enduring spirit of hospitality.
For these men and women, whose daily responsibilities revolve around welcoming strangers and creating memorable experiences, the occasion offered something equally precious — an opportunity to celebrate themselves and rediscover the joy of belonging to a larger hospitality family.
The Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Johor Chapter Run 2026, held on Oct 8, was more than a five-kilometre contest of speed and stamina. Every stride symbolised solidarity, while every cheer echoed the strength of an industry built upon human connections.

The annual event recorded its highest participation, attracting 1,111 employees from 45 Johor hotels, representing establishments ranging from three-star to five-star properties.
Participation has risen steadily, from 776 runners in 2024 to 1,018 last year, before reaching this year’s record figure.
Flagging off the run was Johor Unity, Heritage and Culture Committee chairman P. Pannir Selvam, representing Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
He was accompanied by MAH Malaysia vice-president CS Lim and MAH Johor Chapter chairman Ivan Teo.
Pannir Selvam commended the association for bringing together employees from competing establishments in a celebration of sportsmanship and fellowship.
He said the increasing participation reflected the industry’s growing solidarity and collective commitment to strengthening Johor’s tourism landscape.
“This growing participation clearly demonstrates that hotels in Johor are united and steadfast in supporting our efforts to make tourism in Johor a success,” he said.
Describing hoteliers as important tourism ambassadors, he said their dedication helped shape visitors’ first impressions and lasting memories.
“Hoteliers stand at the forefront of delivering exceptional experiences to tourists.
“Collaboration between the government, the private sector and the tourism community is crucial, as our shared goals will solidify Johor’s standing on the global stage as a tourism destination, not only for the present but also for future generations,” he said.
Beyond the sporting challenge, the event highlighted another pressing concern confronting the hospitality sector — employee retention amid persistent staff turnover.
For CS Lim, retaining employees requires more than remuneration and career advancement. Equally important is cultivating a workplace where individuals feel appreciated, connected and valued.
“To retain employees, we need to build a sense of belonging. A hotel is made up of people, and creating activities such as this provides a relaxed and energetic platform for colleagues from different hotels and departments to connect, make new friends and experience a sense of camaraderie,” he said.

He added that interactions beyond the workplace strengthened team spirit and fostered deeper connections within the hospitality community.
Indeed, behind polished hotel lobbies, immaculate guest rooms and welcoming smiles stands an army of dedicated workers whose tireless contributions often go unnoticed.
From housekeeping attendants preparing rooms before dawn to kitchen personnel enduring demanding shifts and front-office employees welcoming weary travellers, hospitality thrives upon countless acts of dedication.
On this occasion, however, it was their turn to shine.
The runners came not to serve guests, attend to complaints or meet demanding schedules, but to enjoy the companionship of colleagues who understood their profession’s pressures, sacrifices and rewards.
While participation remained the event’s central spirit, competition added excitement.
Muhammad Hidayyad Rohaizad of Mandarin Oriental Desaru emerged champion in the men’s five-kilometre category, clocking 20 minutes and 55 seconds.
In the women’s category, Nur Syafiqah Balqis Mohd Jalani of Pulai Springs Resort claimed victory in 36 minutes.
The run also marked the grand finale of the MAH Johor Games 2026, an inter-hotel sporting initiative launched on May 14.
Over several months, employees competed in Mobile Legends e-sports, badminton, pickleball, bowling and telematch competitions, fostering friendships and healthy rivalry beyond their workplaces.
Legoland Malaysia emerged overall champion of the MAH Johor Games 2026.
The initiative comes as Johor’s hospitality industry anticipates expanding opportunities arising from major economic and infrastructure developments.
With 18,080 hotel rooms, Johor has Malaysia’s fourth-largest hotel room inventory, after Kuala Lumpur and the other Federal Territories, Selangor and Penang, according to MAH.
The association currently has 96 hotel members in Johor.
The Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link and other major investments are expected to increase accommodation demand, generate employment and strengthen Johor’s appeal to leisure and business travellers.
Yet amid the promise of new hotels, growing investments and rising visitor numbers, the gathering underscored an enduring truth — hospitality’s greatest strength lies not in magnificent buildings or sophisticated facilities, but in its people.
Technology may transform hotel operations, but the warmth of a welcome, kindness of a helping hand and sincerity of a smile remain irreplaceable.
For the 1,111 participants, the occasion transcended medals, finishing times and sporting honours. Though representing different establishments, they shared common aspirations, challenges and pride in serving Johor’s visitors.
And as the final runners crossed the finishing line, the greatest triumph was measured neither by the stopwatch nor by who arrived first.
For records may fade and medals lose their lustre, but friendships forged in unity endure beyond the passing years.
And on that memorable morning, 1,111 hearts ran not merely towards a finishing line, but towards a stronger, more united future for Johor’s hospitality family.
