DESARU: For more than three decades, Felix Kah Tze Kang has built a career around arrivals and departures, bustling hotel lobbies, island sunsets and the quiet satisfaction of seeing a guest leave with a smile.
Now, that long journey in hospitality has brought him to the shores of Desaru, where he has taken the helm of Sand & Sandals Desaru Beach Resort with a simple but ambitious purpose — to turn a holiday by the sea into a memory guests will want to relive.
Kah officially assumed his position as general manager on July 15, bringing with him more than 30 years of hospitality experience across Malaysia, Singapore and the United States. From the outset, he said he was struck not only by the resort’s natural appeal, but also by the possibilities waiting to be unlocked.

“My first impression was that the resort has tremendous potential,” he said. “It enjoys a beautiful beachfront location, spacious grounds and excellent recreational facilities, making it an ideal destination for families, corporate retreats and leisure travellers.”
But for Kah, a resort cannot rely on sea views and sunshine alone.
“I also saw many opportunities to elevate the guest experience through product enhancements, service excellence and fresh hospitality concepts,” he added.
Before moving to Desaru, Kah served as general manager of Trove Johor Bahru, overseeing hotel operations, revenue performance, sales and marketing, guest satisfaction and team development.
His career, however, began far from the general manager’s office. Kah entered the industry through front-office operations in Singapore, learning hospitality from the ground up — greeting guests, responding to needs and discovering that behind every room number was a person carrying expectations, celebrations, disappointments or dreams.
Over the years, he rose through the ranks and held senior positions at a variety of properties, including JSK Mantanani Island Resort, Sutera @ Mantanani Island Resort, Likas Square Apartment Hotel, Furama Bukit Bintang and Pavilion Hotel.
The breadth of those assignments exposed him to city hotels, island resorts, serviced apartments and convention-oriented properties — experiences which, he said, moulded the way he leads today.
“Working across different market segments and cultures has taught me that successful leadership is built on trust, accountability and teamwork,” Kah said.
“Managing island resorts, city hotels and large operations has strengthened my ability to adapt quickly while maintaining high service standards. Every challenge has been a valuable learning opportunity.”
At Sand & Sandals, his immediate agenda is broad but firmly centred on people — both those who stay at the resort and those who work there.
He wants to strengthen service quality, improve operational efficiency, raise guest satisfaction, develop employees, introduce fresh experiences and build revenue across market segments.
“Ultimately, I want every guest to leave with wonderful memories and a desire to return,” he said.
That philosophy is closely tied to the way Kah views leadership. Rather than managing from behind a desk, he believes a general manager must remain visible, approachable and willing to set the standards expected of others.
“I lead by example,” he said.
“I believe in empowering people rather than simply managing them. When employees feel respected, appreciated and supported, they naturally provide better service.
“My philosophy is simple: take care of your employees, and they will take care of your guests.”
It is a belief forged over decades of watching young employees find confidence, assume greater responsibilities and, in some cases, eventually become senior hospitality leaders themselves.
Kah said mentoring people remained among the most rewarding parts of his career.
“I find great satisfaction in mentoring employees who later become department heads and general managers themselves. Watching people grow has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.”
Training, therefore, will feature prominently in the resort’s next chapter.
“Hospitality continues to evolve, and continuous learning ensures our employees remain confident, professional and capable of exceeding guest expectations,” he said.
“We will invest in technical skills, leadership development and service excellence programmes.”
For Kah, exceptional hospitality is rarely about grand gestures. Often, he said, it lives in the smallest moments — a sincere greeting, remembering a returning guest’s name or noticing a need before it is expressed.
“Malaysian hospitality is about warmth, sincerity and making guests feel genuinely welcome,” he said.
“It is the little gestures — a smile, remembering a guest’s name or anticipating their needs — that create lasting impressions. Guests should leave feeling they were treated like family.”
That distinctly personal touch will underpin Kah’s larger vision of positioning Sand & Sandals among Desaru’s preferred beachfront destinations for family holidays, corporate retreats, weddings and leisure travel.

The resort already possesses several advantages — its beachfront setting, expansive grounds and range of recreational facilities, including swimming pools, pickleball courts, ATV rides and beach activities.
Kah hopes to build on these by enhancing dining, recreation, wellness and team-building offerings while gradually upgrading facilities.
“We are exploring more family activities, wellness programmes, beach experiences, seasonal events, children’s activities and exciting dining concepts,” he said.
“We also plan to introduce more curated experiences that encourage guests to stay longer and enjoy everything the resort has to offer.”
Weddings and the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions market will also play a central role in the resort’s growth strategy.
“Besides leisure travellers, weddings, corporate meetings, incentives, conferences and team-building programmes provide significant opportunities for year-round business,” Kah said.
“Our spacious grounds and beachfront setting make the resort ideal for memorable events.”
He is equally determined to widen the resort’s appeal beyond the domestic market, particularly among Singaporean and international visitors, while retaining the Malaysian family market that forms an important foundation of Desaru tourism.
Kah believes Desaru itself is entering an important period of opportunity.
“Desaru has enormous growth potential,” he said.
“Its accessibility, beautiful beaches and expanding tourism infrastructure position it as one of Malaysia’s leading coastal destinations.”
Growth, however, comes with expectations.
“The challenge is remaining competitive by continuously improving service standards, creating unique experiences and embracing technology while maintaining personalised hospitality,” he said.
Kah also sees the resort’s future as inseparable from that of the wider community.
He hopes to deepen cooperation with Tourism Johor, Tourism Malaysia, travel agents, airlines, corporate partners, event organisers and local businesses to strengthen Desaru’s standing as a tourism destination.
“Success cannot be achieved alone,” he said. “Strategic partnerships will help us grow together.”
That same sense of shared responsibility extends to sustainability and community development. The resort intends to reduce waste, improve energy efficiency, minimise single-use plastics and support local suppliers where possible.
“A successful resort should benefit the surrounding community,” Kah said.
“We hope to create employment opportunities, support local businesses, collaborate with schools and tourism organisations and participate in community initiatives that contribute to Johor’s tourism growth.”
For his first year, Kah will measure progress not by a single set of figures but through a combination of stronger guest satisfaction, improved employee engagement, increased occupancy and revenue, new guest experiences and a more distinctive market position.
Yet after more than 30 years in an industry often defined by long hours, changing expectations and constant pressure, he said his enthusiasm has not dimmed.
“Hospitality allows us to create happiness every single day,” he said.
“Seeing satisfied guests, developing employees into future leaders and overcoming new challenges continues to motivate me after more than three decades in the industry.”
There is also a deeper lesson he has carried from countless encounters over the years: that hospitality, at its most meaningful, is ultimately an act of human connection.
“Throughout my career, I have seen how a small act of kindness can completely change a guest’s experience,” Kah said.
It is perhaps fitting, then, that his latest professional chapter begins beside the sea — a place of arrivals, reunions and moments families often remember long after footprints in the sand have disappeared.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to lead this wonderful resort,” Kah said.
“Together with our dedicated team, we are committed to creating exceptional experiences for every guest while continuously improving our products, services and facilities.
“The future is very exciting, and we look forward to welcoming everyone to experience our resort.”
And as Sand & Sandals looks towards that future, Kah’s task will be to ensure that beyond rooms filled and targets achieved, guests carry something less measurable home with them — the warmth of having been welcomed, the joy of time well spent and perhaps, somewhere along Desaru’s shoreline, a memory strong enough to bring them back.
