JOHOR BAHRU: The spirit of teamwork and compassion filled the halls of SMK Mutiara Rini as 203 students from 29 primary schools across Pasir Gudang and Johor Bahru gathered for the Junior Red Crescent Bandaging Relay and First Aid Knowledge Competition.
From SK, SJK(T), and SJK(C) schools, the young participants arrived in crisp uniforms and high spirits, ready to prove their skills in one of the most exciting and educational competitions of the year.
The challenge tested both speed and precision — bandages had to be swiftly and neatly applied to the arm, head, shoulder, and knee, all within a limited time. Competitors also faced a brief quiz, answering three questions that assessed their understanding of first aid principles, hygiene, and emergency response.

“The aim of this competition is to prepare our young members for any eventuality or emergency,” said Lau Zheng Lian, Chairperson of the Bandaging Relay Competition Committee for the Junior Team of MRCS Johor Bahru.
“We want them to be confident in handling first aid kits, dressing wounds, and understanding basic hygiene practices such as proper mask use and handwashing.”
The event, which blended excitement with education, also underscored the Red Crescent’s mission to nurture civic responsibility and readiness among youth.
Prizes were awarded to the top five teams, with the champions taking home trophies, medals, and certificates of achievement. Each participating school received a Red Crescent kit bag, while teachers were recognized with certificates of appreciation for their dedication and support.

Adding prestige to the occasion were several distinguished guests, including Chong Ah Ng, advisor to MRCS Johor Bahru District; Chua Liak Ching, Chairman of MRCS Johor Bahru District; Chin Chong Fatt, Deputy Chairman of MRCS Johor Bahru District; Datuk Lim Kian Tiong, Vice-Chairman and Advisor to the Junior Sub-Committee of MRCS Johor Bahru District; and Tan Yap Hau, Vice-Chairman of MRCS Johor Bahru District.
The spirit of compassion and youthful resilience filled the air as Lau Zheng Lian, Organizing Chairman of the Junior Team Bandaging Relay Competition 2025, took the stage at the closing ceremony hosted by SMK Mutiara Rini.
His speech was not merely one of gratitude, but a stirring reflection on teamwork, discipline, and the noble art of saving lives — the very heart of the Malaysian Red Crescent.
“First of all, I would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone,” Lau began, his words resonating across the hall.
“It gives me great joy to see our young members gathered here today for the closing ceremony of the Junior Team Bandaging Relay Competition of the Malaysian Red Crescent, Johor Bahru District, for the year 2025.”

Representing the competition committee and speaking on behalf of all Junior teams, Lau expressed deep appreciation to SMK Mutiara Rini — the host school that had opened its doors and hearts to the event.
“Thank you to the school for graciously providing us with a venue and comfortable facilities that have allowed us to gather and successfully carry out this competition,” he said, acknowledging the school’s unwavering support in nurturing civic spirit and youth development.
Turning to the heart of the event, Lau highlighted the competition’s deeper purpose.
“The main objective of this competition is simple — it is to test and enhance first aid skills, particularly in bandaging techniques, under rapid and practical conditions,” he explained. “But beyond the skills, it is also about fostering teamwork and building self-confidence among our Junior members.”
The Bandaging Relay, a unique blend of speed, precision, and cooperation, has long been a symbol of the Red Crescent’s training excellence. For many participants, it is not just a test of technical ability but a journey of character and compassion — learning to stay calm, think fast, and work together in moments of urgency.

Lau also took a moment to shine a light on the panel of judges — dedicated officers from the Training Unit of the Malaysian Red Crescent, Johor Bahru District — whose professionalism ensured fairness and integrity throughout the competition.
“No competition would be complete without professional judging. We owe a great debt of gratitude to our esteemed panel for undertaking the challenging task of ensuring that this competition is conducted successfully and fairly,” he remarked.
He then extended heartfelt appreciation to the many donors and contributors whose generosity made the event possible.
“The success of this event is also the result of strong support from various parties. Your sincere contributions are truly appreciated,” Lau affirmed, emphasizing the vital role of community support in sustaining youth-led humanitarian initiatives.

But perhaps the most heartfelt moment came as Lau turned his attention to the teacher advisors — the quiet heroes behind every well-prepared team. “Of course, this hall would not be as lively without the participants themselves,” he said warmly.
“Our sincere gratitude goes to the teacher advisors of the 29 Junior teams who took part in this event. Your commitment in training and guiding your teams is deeply admired and respected.”
As the applause rose to fill the hall, Lau’s closing words captured the essence of the day — a celebration not just of competition, but of service, solidarity, and shared humanity.
In an age where skills can save lives, the young members of the Malaysian Red Crescent are learning more than just first aid — they are learning what it means to care, to serve, and to stand together.
In his address, Chua Liak Ching, Chairman of the MRCS Johor Bahru District, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the host school and its principal, Zanariah M. Yasin, for their warm support and generosity in providing the venue.
“We truly value the strong support extended by the school,” Chua said, commending the enthusiasm and teamwork of participants. “The dedication shown by every student and volunteer is truly inspiring.”

This year’s competition drew participation from 29 school teams, reflecting what Chua described as “a growing interest in first aid knowledge among the younger generation.” He also highlighted that the Johor Bahru and Pasir Gudang districts now boast 8,517 registered Junior members, an encouraging sign of the movement’s vitality and reach.
The event also featured a First Aid Kit Presentation Ceremony, held to honour the commitment of Young Teams from primary schools who have been actively involved in MRC co-curricular programmes from 2021 to 2025.
“This initiative stands as a token of appreciation for their unwavering dedication and service,” Chua added, underscoring the organisation’s mission to nurture compassion and preparedness among youth.
The day’s event not only celebrated teamwork and skill but also reaffirmed the Red Crescent’s enduring role in empowering young Malaysians to serve their communities with care and courage.
As the competition concluded, cheers erupted from students and teachers alike — a celebration not just of victory, but of compassion, courage, and the Red Crescent spirit that inspires Malaysia’s next generation of first responders.
