KLUANG: The spirit of Deepavali shone brightly last night as the Rotary Club of Kluang celebrated the Festival of Lights with a heartfelt gesture of compassion — distributing groceries and festive gifts to 40 underprivileged Hindu families.

The celebration, themed “Spreading Joy and Light,” was held at Rice and Curry’s Restaurant (formerly Arusuvai Empire Cuisine), owned by Rotarian PE Dr. Ruban Arumugam and his spouse, Praveena.

The event brought together more than 100 people, including club members, their families, guests, and the beneficiary families — a moving testament to the power of unity, generosity, and shared humanity.

The aroma of traditional dishes, the gleam of oil lamps, and the laughter that filled the evening created an atmosphere of warmth and belonging that went beyond the festive trimmings.

“It wasn’t just about the food or the gifts,” said Louis Martin, the Organising Chairman for the event. “It was about reminding every family that they are seen, valued, and celebrated. Deepavali, at its heart, is about the triumph of light over darkness — and that light shines brightest when we lift others with us.”

In true Rotary spirit, the evening began with camaraderie and conversation. Club members mingled with guests, sharing stories and reflections on hope, prosperity, and renewal.

As Martin noted, “We wanted every guest to feel part of the Rotary family. When you sit together, share a meal, and exchange smiles, you realise that service isn’t just an act — it’s a feeling of connection.”

The highlight of the evening was the distribution of grocery packs and festive hampers — lovingly prepared by Rotary members. Each pack, brimming with essentials, symbolised not only sustenance but solidarity.

“Every item placed in those grocery bags carried a wish — a wish for comfort, health, and brighter tomorrows,” Martin shared with emotion. “For many of these families, small gestures like these mean the world. They remind them that their community cares.”

Adding to the celebration, the event saw the participation of distinguished guests including YB Chew Chong Sin, Mengkibol Assemblyman who contributed 40 “Food Bakul” for the families, and several prominent Rotarians — DGE Dr. Senthil Doraisamy, Regional Assistant Governor Coordinator Johor/Melaka Lee Chin Guan, Dato Rugber Singh, and Rtn Capt Kumar Manoharan, whose presence underscored Rotary’s deep commitment to service and inclusivity.

“Seeing everyone come together — leaders, members, families, and friends — it reaffirmed what Deepavali truly stands for,” said Martin. “It’s not just the lighting of lamps, but the lighting of hearts.”

The evening also marked a symbolic new beginning for the club, as it welcomed two new potential members who are set to be inducted next month. Their presence reflected the growing enthusiasm and vitality within the Rotary community in Kluang.

Behind the success of the evening was a spirit of teamwork and generosity. Martin took a moment to express his gratitude:

“Our heartfelt thanks go out to our Indian Rotarian members who sponsored the food — your generosity made this evening possible. Special thanks as well to PE Dr. Ruban Arumugam and Praveena for opening their restaurant and hearts to us. You gave us the perfect home for this celebration.”

As the night drew to a close, candles flickered gently on the tables, and the laughter of children echoed through the restaurant.

The families left not only with groceries in hand but with renewed hope in their hearts. The Rotarians, too, carried something home — the quiet joy that comes from service and solidarity.

“Deepavali reminds us that no matter how dark the night, there’s always light ahead,” Martin reflected. “And when we share that light — through kindness, empathy, or simple acts of giving — the world becomes a brighter place for everyone.”

In a community still healing from the challenges of recent years, the Rotary Club of Kluang’s Deepavali gathering was more than an event — it was a celebration of humanity, faith, and resilience.

As Martin aptly concluded, “Service above self — that’s not just our motto; it’s our way of life. This Deepavali, we didn’t just celebrate a festival. We celebrated the power of love, the strength of unity, and the beauty of giving.”

The evening ended with hearts full of gratitude, plates full of flavour, and a shared promise — to keep the flame of compassion burning long after the lamps of Deepavali fade.
