JOHOR BAHRU: The Malaysian Red Crescent Society Johor Bahru Branch has turned its 70th anniversary celebration into more than just a milestone—it became a living testament to humanity.
In a gesture of compassion and community spirit, the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) No. 1 channeled RM2,000 from its fundraising efforts into welfare visits, bringing joy and comfort to residents of the Second Goodness Old Folks Care Centre and children at the Shan De Children Welfare Home.
For the Red Crescent, the anniversary was not about pomp and ceremony but about reaffirming its mission: to serve with kindness, care, and compassion. The initiative brought together 37 volunteers and their families, weaving together laughter, learning, and companionship in a way that touched hearts across generations.

At the Second Goodness Old Folks Care Centre, the day was filled with heartfelt reunions. It had been seven years since VAD No. 1 last visited, and the elders welcomed the volunteers with open arms and warm smiles.
The hall quickly came alive with laughter during a “water bottle winding” competition, where seniors gamely rewound bottles along strings, cheered on by volunteers. A touch of magic was added to the day with performances designed to bring good fortune, health, and joy to the residents.
But beyond the entertainment, what mattered most was the gift of time. Volunteers sat side by side with the elderly, listening intently to their stories, offering helping hands with meals, and ensuring the environment was comfortable. The simple act of conversation brought tears to the eyes of some residents.
“It’s not the material help we need most, but someone willing to spend time with us and chat,” one elder shared, echoing the quiet yearning for companionship that often goes unheard.

A shared buffet lunch added to the atmosphere of togetherness. Elders and volunteers dined side by side, trading laughter and reflections in moments that felt more like family gatherings than a charitable visit. When it was time to leave, many seniors clasped the volunteers’ hands tightly, reluctant to part and expressing hopes for another visit soon.
The journey continued at Shan De Children Welfare Home, where the team brought practical gifts—school supplies and small tokens—to support the children’s daily lives. But just as with the elders, the focus was on building experiences and memories.
Volunteers demonstrated proper handwashing techniques in a fun and interactive way, turning hygiene education into a lively game. The children eagerly participated, learning while laughing, proving that lessons of health and cleanliness can be engaging and meaningful.
Adding to the excitement, the team celebrated the birthdays of children born in September and October. Cakes were cut, candles blown out, and cheers rang through the home as each child basked in the spotlight. The room was filled with joy, and the smiles on the children’s faces reflected a sense of belonging and celebration.

For VAD No. 1, the anniversary initiative was about more than marking time—it was about reaffirming responsibility.
“The 70th anniversary is not just a milestone—it is a responsibility,” said the organizers. “By dedicating part of our fundraising to welfare visits, we hope to create tangible impact and inspire society to pay closer attention to the health and development of vulnerable groups.”
This statement underscores the Red Crescent’s enduring mission: to provide care that extends beyond immediate needs, fostering compassion and nurturing the spirit of volunteerism among the younger generation.
While essentials were delivered, it was clear that the visits meant far more than physical aid. They were about restoring dignity, creating bonds, and planting seeds of kindness that could ripple outward into the community.
The elders felt seen and heard, the children felt celebrated, and the volunteers themselves were reminded of the deep fulfillment that comes from giving time and heart.

For seven decades, the Malaysian Red Crescent Society Johor Bahru Branch has been a steady hand of support in times of crisis and calm alike. From disaster relief to welfare initiatives, it has continuously adapted to meet the needs of the community while staying true to its founding values of humanity, impartiality, and voluntary service.
The 70th anniversary celebration, carried out through acts of kindness, reflects not only the organization’s past but also its vision for the future—a future where compassion continues to light the way.
As the volunteers left the homes, their presence lingered in the smiles of the elderly and the laughter of children. The message was clear: true celebration is not found in ceremonies, but in the quiet, powerful acts of humanity that uplift lives and inspire hope.
