
JOHOR BAHRU: A vibrant celebration of culture, community, and global unity took centre stage at Austin Heights International School (AHIS) as the school held its highly anticipated International Day & Family Day recently.
The event brought together students, parents, teachers, and dignitaries for a memorable showcase of multiculturalism, pride, and family spirit.
With over 1,400 students representing 26 nationalities, the day was a visual feast of colours, flavours, and traditions.

Guests of honour, included Sigit Suryantoro Widiyanto, Indonesian Consulate-General, Marsianda Widiyanto, the wife of the Indonesian Consulate-General, Lim En Wei, Vice-Consul Singapore Consulate-General, Rokiah Ahmad, senior assistant director Johor Education Department, and Irene Serena David, AHIS parent-support group chairman.
Also present were Dato’ Ir. Steve Chong Yoon On, founder chairman AHIS, Datin Low Peck Tim, CEO of AHIS, Gloria Lim Zhngli, director, Suresh Kumar Balakrishnan AHIS principal and Sylvie Meurein, AHIS deputy principal.
The VIPs and education stakeholders, joined parents and staff at the school hall early in the morning. The event kicked off with an energetic opening ceremony marked by the much-awaited International Walk-In Parade.
Students proudly marched in, donning traditional costumes and waving the flags of their home countries. From Malaysia and South Korea to Japan, India, Sri Lanka, and beyond, the parade was a powerful display of patriotism, unity, and cultural pride.
Smiles, cheers, and applause filled the air as the young global citizens confidently showcased their heritage.
Following the parade, the crowd was treated to a series of welcoming performances, featuring dances and music reflecting the rich tapestry of global traditions.
The floor came alive with rhythmic drums, elegant movements, and colourful backdrops, each performance carefully prepared by the students with support from their dedicated teachers.

Addressing the attendees, AHIS principal Suresh Kumar Balakrishnan expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the AHIS community and highlighted the importance of cultural exchange and inclusivity.
“Our school is a microcosm of the world. With students from 26 countries, we take pride in nurturing global citizens who not only excel academically but also respect and embrace differences,” he said.
“Today’s event is more than a celebration — it’s a reminder that diversity is our strength, and unity is our purpose,” he stressed.
He went on to say that today is not just a celebration of cultures, but a reminder that we are part of a global family.

The celebrations continued as VIPs and parents were invited to explore the country booths, meticulously curated by students and staff.
Each booth reflected the essence of a specific country through décor, traditional artifacts, and interactive activities. Lively conversations and laughter echoed throughout the school grounds as visitors engaged with student ambassadors at each station.
One of the highlights of the day was the International Food Bazaar, where guests were invited to indulge in a wide variety of authentic cuisines from around the world. From spicy Indian curries and Korean street snacks to Malaysian satay, Japanese sushi, French pastries, and Middle Eastern treats, the culinary tour delighted every palate.
VIPs and school leaders had the honour of sampling the dishes, many of which were prepared by parents and community volunteers.
“It’s heartwarming to see how everyone came together — students, parents, and teachers — to contribute to such a meaningful experience,” said one guest.

Throughout the day, the main stage remained a focal point with a series of student performances, including cultural dances, musical ensembles, and even martial arts demonstrations. Each act reflected the school’s commitment to promoting artistic talent while reinforcing the value of cultural understanding.
Parents expressed pride and joy watching their children perform. Many took photos and videos, capturing the spirit of the occasion.
“This is a wonderful way to bring families together while also educating the younger generation about respect and diversity,” said another parent.
As the day drew to a close, the school organised a special lucky draw session, offering a range of exciting prizes generously sponsored by local businesses and the school community. The crowd erupted in excitement as winners were announced, adding a fun and festive conclusion to an already remarkable day.
The AHIS International Day & Family Day 2025 was more than a school event — it was a celebration of identity, harmony, and shared humanity. In a world that is increasingly interconnected yet sometimes divided, the students of Austin Heights International School reminded everyone that understanding and unity begin with simple acts of learning about one another.
