JOHOR BAHRU: The Rotary Club of Impian Emas (RCIE) has opened a new rehabilitation centre to aid stroke survivors, accident victims, and the elderly in their journeys toward recovery and healing.

The opening ceremony, which was held recently, marks a significant step forward in community health care, reflecting the Rotary Club’s ongoing commitment to service above self.

Incoming President Agnes Chong explained that the new facility was a much-needed addition to the community.

The physiotherapist performed a manual proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) technique.

“We recognized a significant gap in the health care services available to aid people in their recovery after a stroke or a major accident, as well as for our elderly population, who frequently suffer from mobility and functionality issues.

This new rehabilitation centre, she said is designed to aid their progress and enable them to regain independence in their daily routines.”

She stressed that the centre was the brainchild of Rotarians Pang Chik Khang and Edmund Khoo. The idea was mooted in 2022.

Chong further explained that there is a shortage of physiotherapy facilities in the region, which can prolong the recovery process for many patients and undermine their eventual health outcomes.

The Rotary Club decided to step in and fill this void by establishing a state-of-the-art rehabilitation centre staffed by trained therapists and care providers who specialize in a range of recovery techniques and methods tailored to each patient’s needs.

The new centre which is located in Taman Impian Emas is equipped with a range of advanced equipment, including parallel bars, wall bar, resistance training machines, ultrasound therapy, treadmill, MOTOmed movement therapy and electrostimulation, which aid in strengthening limbs, improving range of motion, reducing pain, and fostering faster recovery.

The physiotherapist taught targeted rehabilitation exercises using gym ball and mirror feedback.

Furthermore, the facility offers group therapy sessions and occupational therapy to aid patients in their eventual return to independent living and employment, adding a crucial dimension to their healing process.

Speaking to ApaKhabar TV, she said, “Charity should not just be a donation rather it should be a long-term journey, built on service, heart and empathy.”

Not mincing her words, she said the club aims to provide something deeper – A safe haven where patients and families feel supported, not alone.

She went on to say that the club wants to reignite hope, especially for those who feel theirs are fading.

The centre, she said will ensure it becomes fully operational, sustainable, and widely known among the communities in need.

“The centre will be made affordable for all patients undergoing rehabilitation at a price they can afford,” she assured.

This initiative resonates strongly with Rotary’s motto, “Service Above Self”, reflecting their understanding that health care is not a privilege for a few but a necessity for all members of the community.

She urged those individuals experiencing stroke, trauma, or the effects of aging can be referred to the centre.

She said they are often referred to as having neurological impairments or disabilities, depending on the specific impact and severity.

“These conditions can lead to a range of functional limitations, impacting mobility, cognition, and daily living activities,” she added.

In the pipeline under phase two development plan will be a child rehabilitation unit catering for children with developmental and motor challenges.

The Rotary Club of Impian Emas is proud to contribute to the well-being of its community and hopefully enable many individuals to realize their full potential in their recovery journeys.
