Southern Thailand is once again facing turmoil with a recent incident today (June 30, 2024), where a car bomb exploded at the Bannang Sata District Police Station flats in Yala Province. The explosion resulted in one fatality and 16 injuries.

The incident, occurring around 10:30 AM, marks the first car bomb attack in Southern Thailand this year, a month after the Barisan Revolusi Nasional Melayu Patani (BRN) announced an agreement to reduce and temporarily halt violence in the region.

Thai authorities said they are hunting two man caught on closed-circuit television (CCTV) who they believe may be behind Sunday’s incident at Bannang Sata, Yala.

Details of the Incident:

  • Explosion Impact: The car bomb caused a large fire, destroying several vehicles, including motorcycles, and spreading to nearby buildings.
  • Fatality: Rokeyeh Sarana, 45, from Ban Bajao, Bannang Sata district, Yala.
  • Injuries: Among the 16 injured, six are police officers stationed at the police station. The remaining injured are believed to be family members of the officers, including women and children. All have been transported to Bannang Sata Hospital for treatment.

Background and Statistics:
Historical Context: This car bomb attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents in Southern Thailand since unrest erupted in 2004. The region, known as the ‘Deep South,’ includes Yala, Narathiwat, Pattani provinces, and four districts in Songkhla – Saba Yoi, Tepha, Chana, and Natawee.

First Incident: Car bomb attacks began in 2005, and the recent incident at Bannang Sata Police Station is the 62nd occurrence.

Distribution of Car Bomb Attacks:

  • Narathiwat Province: 25 cases
  • Yala Province: 15 cases
  • Pattani Province: 17 cases
  • Four districts in Songkhla Province: 4 cases

There was also an incident outside these four provinces at the Central Festival shopping mall in Koh Samui, Surat Thani Province, in 2015, linked to insurgent groups from the southern border region.

No group has claimed responsibility for the latest attack.

Recent Violence:
Previous Incident: On May 6, around 9:35 PM, two Malaysians were among nine injured when a motorcycle bomb exploded near a security control center at Tha Phraya Dam, a popular riverside area.

BRN’s Commitment: On May 29, BRN’s Technical Department spokesman, Ustaz Khalid Abdullah, confirmed that BRN and the Royal Thai Government’s Peace Dialogue Panel (PEDP/RTG) agreed to reduce and temporarily halt violence during a meeting in Kuala Lumpur.

Peace Dialogue: The 10th Joint Technical Committee Meeting of the Southern Thailand Border Region Peace Dialogue Process (JWG-PDP) between PEDP/RTG and BRN was held from May 19 to May 21, 2024, in Kuala Lumpur.

The latest incident underscores the ongoing instability in Southern Thailand, despite both BRN and the Thai government agreeing to reduce and halt violence. As seen in conflict zones worldwide, DANGER STILL PERSISTS.
