JOHOR BAHRU: In a hilarious display of talent and infectious laughter, Jayamalar Jeyaratnam,66, from Perak emerged victorious at the 2024 Malaysia Laughing Championship.

The event, held virtually showcased the extraordinary ability of contestants from across the nation to spread joy and laughter during challenging times.

Jayamalar will now stand to compete as Malaysia’s representative for the World Laughing Championship to be held next month.

Contestants are judged by their contagiousness or their laughter by a live online audience.

Despite the virtual format, the competition attracted a number of audience.

This international viewership highlights the universality of laughter – a language that transcends borders and unites people in joy.

The Malaysia Laughing Championship may be over, but the quest for laughter continues.

The Johor Bahru Happy & Joyous Club, with its focus on Laughter Yoga, promotes the power of playful laughter for well-being.

Laughing Championships are contests of contagious laughter where competitors go head to head and the most contagious laugher wins. The goal of the championships is simple. To create more contagious laughter in the world and to elevate the pursuit of joy and happiness.

The Johor Bahru Happy & Joyous Club had organized the Malaysia Laughing Championship 2024 via zoom for the third consecutive year since 2021.

The Malaysian Laughing Championship 2024 attracted a number of international viewers.

According to the organizing chairman Doreen Tay, the main objective is to select a Malaysia Laughing Champion to represent Malaysia at the World Laughing Championship to be held on June 1.

Doreen said the criteria on selection were based on Humility, Joyfulness, Sparkle, Contagiousness and Originality.

At the recent championship eight contestants were selected through the laughter videos submitted on registration, went through the Laughter Challenges based on the criteria as stated.

She said there were 3 elimination rounds at the contest and two finalists competed at the finals.

She mentioned that the topics included your personal best laughter, one animal laughter, shy laughter and in the playground laughter.
The event was viewed by 12 different countries with eight Malaysians participating.
