There are many different species of birds out on the paddy fields.

The largest among them are the Asian Openbill Stork or Anastomus oscitans.

This stork has a distinctive curve that leaves a gap between the upper and lower mandibles.

The Asian Openbill Stork will fly long distances for better weather and food availability. A few years ago they were not as common in Malaysia as today.

Hence Malaysian weather and food resources must be good for this stork.

They are often found standing on the bunds looking for freshwater snails or flying gracefully circling the sky above the paddy fields.

Let’s celebrate Malaysian nature’s rich biodiversity, and promote their sustainability.
