JOHOR BARU: The 8th Johor International Student Leaders Conference (JISLC 2023) will be held here from February 22-25.
Organised by the Johor Student Leaders Council (JSLC), the conference will be at KSL Hotel and Resort, said its project director Felicia Liau Qin Yu adding that it is expected to attract about 1,300 youth aged between 13 and 25 from around the globe.
The four-day gathering of youths, themed “Revolutionising Sights: Reversing Stigmas” has drawn participants fromKorea, Indonesia and Somalia and they are expecting more to join in.
Stressing on the theme of the conference, she said it represents how the youth must stand up and unite to alter the traditional perceptions and views that have been established in the mindset of our generation.

Felicia said the conference will be officiated by Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
Johor state executive council chairman for Education, Information and Communication Norliza Noh is also expected to attend.
“Intellectual discourse, networking sessions, paper presentations and cultural performances will be prepared and presented by the students themselves,” said Felicia.
She said the objective of this conference is to create an international platform for youths to unite.
She added “We would like to inspire and establish their mindset and perspective that the “impossible can be possible.
“The conference will provide them with exposure to global issues and solutions, to promote critical and constructive thinking among the youths.”
The conference will be a platform for youths to voice their ideas and beliefs to the world, and make them the next generation of powerful young global leaders.
Among the sub-themes of the conference include: Contemporary Education via Cyberspace, Undermined Violence: Cases Long Overdue, and Excessive Confidence in Everlasting Democracy.
Other topics included are Global Warming: Why So Serious and Digital Economy: Progressing & Expanding.
The keynote address will be delivered by Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, the first Malaysian astronaut who will speak on “Breaking Stigmas: Human Perceptions” and the second keynote will be delivered by Sharina Shahrin, a mixed-media visual artist whose theme is “Forging your own Path.”
Meanwhile there will be two speakers from Sunway College, Gabriel Tan, manager-student relations and Jessica Law Hwee Thean, student counsellor and manager of students services.
The JSLC was established as a group of elite student leaders and exceptional young talents from Johor schools.
It was initiated by the Johor Education Department (JPNJ) and the Iskandar Regional Development (IRDA) and receives firm support from the Johor state government.
The establishment of the JSLC was not only to hone leadership skills among Johor’s top students, but also to mobilise the “internationalisation of schools’ programmes.”
JSLC is based on the principle of “for the students, by the students,” which signifies its ability to empower youths to plan, organise and mobilise huge programmes that can produce competitive human capital able to strive and compete on any platform.
The organising committee of the conference comprises 19 members from the JSLC Cohort 11, who proudly took up the challenge of organising an international event of this magnitude.
